My Story

In the summer of 2021, my journey with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) began with an unusual case of heartburn, leading to the discovery of a large mass on my liver and a diagnosis of cancer of an unknown primary. After months of tests and consultations, I finally received my CCA diagnosis.

In January 2022, I underwent a successful liver resection and began chemotherapy. Regrettably, by the summer of that year, my cancer had returned. Following several molecular tests, five different treatment protocols, as well as consultations from major centers in the U.S. and Canada, my condition progressed, and the outlook appeared dire.

However, in October 2023, despite having over 20 lesions on my liver, I gained access to a sixth treatment through further molecular profiling. Remarkably, within five weeks, many tumors had disappeared, and the remaining ones shrank significantly. I enjoyed 18 months of stability, during which I received SBRT for the remaining lesions and cherished quality time with my husband and young children.

This past April, my cancer progressed once again. I underwent a new biopsy and further molecular testing, followed by ablation and more SBRT. Currently, I am advocating for access another targeted therapy based on the results of the molecular testing.

Throughout this journey, HOPE has been my constant companion—not just for myself but for others facing similar battles. The landscape of care has evolved significantly over the past four years, and I find solace in knowing that others on this journey have improved access to equitable and effective care.

The C3 organization has played a pivotal role in my advocacy efforts. I serve as a patient partner with various cancer organizations, mentor through the CCF, and lead the Manitoba CCA community. Connecting with fellow Canadians has been a profound source of inspiration, as we share our stories and form beautiful friendships.

My family and I are looking forward to participating in this year's CholangioCycle Challenge, not only is this event essential for raising awareness and funds for CCA research and molecular programs, but cycling remains an activity that I have been able to continue to enjoy with my family throughout my journey.

I hope you will consider joining a team, riding solo, and/or making a donation to this event. Together, we are advancing care - let's cycle together toward HOPE!
